รูปแบบการเขียนเอกสารอ้างอิง ที่ใช้ในวารสารวิชาการแพทย์และสาธารณสุขทั่วไป มักนิยมใช้การอ้างอิงรูปแบบแวนคูเวอร์ (Vancouver Style) ในปัจจุบัน International Committee of Medical Journal Editor ยังคงแนะนำให้ใช้รูปแบบแวนคูเวอร์ แต่เพิ่มเติมรายละเอียดให้เหมาะสมกับสถานการณ์
ในการอ้างถึงเอกสารวิชาการรูปแบบแวนคูเวอร์ ให้เรียงลำดับของเอกสาร ตามลำดับเลขที่มีการอ้างถึงในเนื้อหารายงานหรือบทความ และหมายเลขที่อ้างถึงในเนื้อเรื่องนั้น จะต้องตรงกับหมายเลขที่มีการกำกับไว้ในส่วนเอกสารอ้างอิงด้วย โดยเรียงลำดับจากหมายเลข 1 ไปจนถึงเลขที่สุดท้าย (1, 2, 3,…) ให้เขียนหมายเลขอยู่ในวงเล็บ ( ) ต่อท้ายข้อความที่นำมาอ้างอิงในรายงาน
